What Type of Self Defense is Right For You?

It can be difficult to decide what style of self defense is right for your needs. There are a wide variety of self defense training options to choose from. Some are designed for the average person, some are designed for people worried about getting attacked by groups, and some are very specific in terms of tactics and strategies. While no particular method is necessarily better than another in the big picture, there is always going to be one or two methods that are best for you. Here is a quick look at some of the variables that you may want to consider when trying to decide which one is right for you.

One of the most important things to consider is your own physical limitations. If you do not naturally have good upper body strength, then you may not get the most benefit from choosing a program that will have you using your upper body most of the time. If you are learning self defense simply because you want to feel more safe and secure in general, then you may not benefit from a program that focuses on specific situations. The key to choosing the right self defense program is making sure that it compliments your natural strengths and minimizes your natural weaknesses.

Of course, while you are looking into your own strengths and weaknesses, you also want to make sure that program is going to be effective. It doesn't help to choose a self defense course that doesn't provide you with all of the tools that you want to have because you will end up having to find supplemental courses as well. Ideally, you can find and use a single program to teach you everything that you want to know. The reason for this is not only because it is easier, but also because your self defense training will be more effective. Every course uses a different approach, which means that there is a chance that the supplemental courses that you choose could be incompatible in terms of overall philosophy.

You should also consider how much time and effort you want to dedicate to your self defense training. Some self defense courses offer the basic principles of self defense and can benefit you in an "average" situation such as dealing with a drunk friend or someone who is just out to fight. However, others go into more detail in terms of handling "advanced" situations like getting jumped in an alley or being attacked by a group of people that have the intention of causing serious physical harm. In general, the more in-depth program will require more time and effort not only to learn everything, but also to maintain your skills.

While there is no best overall form of self defense, there will be a handful of courses that could be best for you and your needs. By looking at common variables such as your personal strengths, weaknesses, and desires, as well as what exactly you want to learn and how much time you can commit to it, it will be much easier to identify what type of self defense training will be right for you.
