While it may be easy to spot the real losers - the adulterers, the abusers, those engaged in illegal activity and so on - it's still not always easy to tell whether or not you'll end up marrying the right person in the long run. At times you may even doubt whether a marriage will work in the long term. Here are a few tips for men and women considering marriage that may help you decide if your marriage will last:

You and your partner are not deceitful towards one another

You are indeed on the right track if your partner is truly honest with you. Your spouse should be honest with himself or herself not only about admitting mistakes, but in every aspect of your relationship. It's not healthy for your partner to go to extremes in making personal changes just to accommodate you. It's reasonable to have second thoughts if you suspect dishonesty. If, however, you find it very difficult to be honest with him or her, you probably haven't chosen the right partner for yourself.

Each of you communicates honestly and openly with the other

If you can be honest and open with one another regardless of whatever disagreements you may have, you're probably marrying the right person. Communication skills will help to strengthen and deepen your relationship. This even applies to friends. If you do not have this foundation of friendship, your marriage may not work at all. At this point, you should have a general sense of how much of a conversation you can have. Something very important concerning relationships is being able to tell if you can both play accordingly as one speaking and the other is listening.

You'll want your future spouse to support you in your dreams, travails, and aspirations

Most people want to be happy in their relationships and in their lives. Nobody can have a perfect marriage. What they can have is a happy, constructive marriage. Your happiness in all forms needs to be complete with your mate.

You have the same basic principles, objectives, and opinions on important matters

Marriage is a deep connection for life. Creating a lasting relationship requires effort on both sides, but if your directions in life are different right from the start, it may be a sign that you are not right for each other. Sharing similar morals, dreams, and beliefs is an excellent sign that two people are compatible. While everyone has different views about something, there are some delicate and intimate issues on which both parties should agree, or else your relationship is in danger. For instance, if you don't share the same beliefs regarding work or having children, you may find yourselves constantly fighting with one another - a situation that can easily lead to a break-up.

You and your spouse agree with each other in terms of sex, intimacy, and affection

Intimacy and sexual relations can heat up any partnership. Most critically, however, is that all humans need it, so you must provide each other with this. If you do not agree with each other when it comes to this aspect, it could pose a great problem. Then again, affection is equally significant for keeping you feeling close and connected. You usually don't need flowers or other stereotypical gifts. But simple words and deeds that show you truly love each other are enough to keep your marriage lasting.

Love is the fuel in marriage. If you find that most or all of these ingredients are missing, you may well not really be in love with each other. Maybe you should not get married if your relationship has these characteristics.
