Your child's bedroom may be the smallest in the house, which can sometimes seem ironic since from birth, they probably have more stuff than anyone else in the house. While you may make every attempt to keep the items quarantined to the bedroom, they have a tendency to creep out into the rest of your home, making the environment chaotic. If you are able to create an organized space in the bedroom, it can prevent the mess from bleeding into other rooms in your house. This will also help your child learn to clean up and chances are their behavior will improve because they have a space that is relaxed, organized, and all their own. One of the best ways to keep a kid's room organized is to add plenty of storage. Decorate shelving and a kid's locker can help keep clothing, toys, and school materials organized.
Another way to improve the storage in your child's room is to create a larger closet space. You can do this in a few ways. If the existing closet is a good size, find ways to maximize the space you have. Custom closet systems are a great way to make the most of a moderately sized closet. If the closet is smaller, consider bumping it out into your child's room or another room. You may be able to take a few feet of space from another place to create a greater closet space. Finally, consider using a closet in a different room in combination with the closet in your child's space. You can swap seasonal items from closet to closet to allow for maximize space.
Your final storage option should be to add toy storage to the room. While shelves help for some toy storage, you will want to add at least on toy chest. This way you can gather items and put them in a box, under cover, creating a more organized look. Check the toy chest for safety features and be sure your child is able to get out of the chest, should they choose to climb into it. If you have concerns about the age of your child and his safety around a toy chest, consider keeping a lock on it until he is old enough to play safety with the chest.
Remember that play and storage is not the main purpose of your child's bedroom. Supply him with a comfortable bed that makes bedtime stress free. It can be a challenge for a child to wind down at the end of the day and prepare for sleep. Help him rest easy by making the bed an inviting space, but still keeping it safe. All of the blankets and pillows you have on your bed may not work for your child. Let him choose his own bedding and add a few special features to the bed like a bedside lamp or book shelf that he can use. This way he will have some control over bedtime and feel grown up when he switches out his light and puts away his bedtime book.
Finally, choose the colors in your child's room carefully. Bright colors are fun for play and learning, but it may make it tough to calm down and get to sleep. Consider a mix of soothing colors with a few bright images for daytime.
