Being able to communicate is vital in any relationship, but particularly in a marriage. When couples make effective communication a priority, many serious marriage problems can be avoided. Remember that communication goes both ways. It involves talking as well as listening. Your partner will feel like they matter if you make the effort to listen well. If you want to make your spouse happy, remember to listen and don't just wait for your turn to talk. Tips and tricks for improving your listening skills.

When you listen, don't be judgmental

It's important to remain non-judgmental when you're listening to your partner. Some people get their retort ready without even listening to what the other person is saying. Being open-minded means you are keeping the conversation natural and free-flowing without the interruption of your personal agenda. Making rash judgments will cause arguments and keep you from focusing on what your loved one is saying. Additionally, don't jump to conclusions.

You need to maintain eye contact

Body language tells you a great deal about how much attention you're paying to a speaker. Keep eye contact when you are listening to your spouse talk so he or she will know you are really listening. Stop thinking about other things or zoning while listening to your partner when he is talking.

Avoid interrupting

Avoid interrupting and let your spouse speak their piece. Even if your partner is saying something against you, don't be defensive and don't argue while he or she still talking so you can show your spouse feel that you value his or her opinion and thoughts. Ask questions to better understand the matter after your spouse is finished talking if something if either bothering you or is unclear. People who interrupt all the time miss the whole story and can't respond to it well.

Pay attention to cues that aren't spoken

While your partner is speaking, observe changes in their voice and body language like facial expressions and other mannerisms, which will give you clues to what they are not saying. You can respond to your partner better and deal with a conversation more effectively by noticing the nonverbal details.

Be aware of gender differences

Studies indicate that Men have different ways of communicating than women. An example might be in the way the different sexes use body language. When men talk it's usually for the purpose of sharing information, or giving thought to an issue that they want to resolve. By contrast, women talk to feel connected and learn things. Being knowledgeable about these unique traits, of men and women, will help you to communicate in a more effective manner.

Being a passive listener is something you should avoid

When your spouse is telling you something, concentrate on what they're saying so you will remember it. Clarify points and respond constructively and appropriately.

A very important aspect of communication for any couple is the art of listening.
