Murphy Beds: Five Factors You Ought to Know

By : Patricia Strasser

During the 1920's and 1930's, wall beds were considered as fancy furniture items for your home. Typically, this type of bed is hinged vertically against a closet or wall and can be easily folded up for storage when not needed. In North America, wall beds commonly referred to as Murphy beds were developed so as to utilize the space in homes to the fullest extent. These beds are practical choices for people living in condominiums and other limited spaces. In addition, they can transform any room into a place to sleep. Sacramento murphy beds have stayed ahead of the times with innovative variations and features. Here are additional things that you need to know about this specialty furniture.

The original patent for the Murphy bed was issued to William L. Murphy in 1916

On April 1, 1916, the patent for the bed design was applied for by William Laurence Murphy. He was given design patent number D49, 273 on June 27, 1926. Murphy Wall Bed Company was created and beds began to be made in San Francisco. Murphy Bed Co. Inc became the company's new name in 1990. The main office of this company was relocated to Farmingdale, New York.

A Murphy bed has two variations in the way it is stored

Murphy beds have two different designs, each one differing according to how they are stored, with the most common model being the vertical kind. There is also a horizontal type of this bed which is raised horizontally and can be folded or stored horizontally on its side. The horizontal variation is ideal for spaces or rooms with low ceilings or overhangs.

You can find murphy beds in many different sizes

Murphy beds come in a variety of sizes just like conventional beds do. Usually they are available in all the usual mattress sizes like king, queen, double and single. Twin , full, queen and eastern king are the sizing variations used by some Murphy bed companies.

The Murphy bed is making a comeback in recent years

In the 1950's Murphy beds saw a decline in demand and popularity when people could afford larger homes and had the luxury of owning bigger living spaces. In recent years, however, this specialty furniture is making a comeback because more people are moving into the city and are living in condominiums, studio apartments and other living quarters with limited space. With property being so pricey in both suburbs and cities, many homeowners are looking for smaller homes with space they can use more efficiently. Murphy beds are also becoming popular in facilities like homeless shelters, fire stations and hospitals.

Murphy beds may be designed with additional features.

Murphy beds have become more than just space-saving beds because they can also be configured to have more features like matching storage compartments, dressers, book cases, shelves and many others. There are many models of that bed from which you can choose any according to your needs and style.

Murphy beds were designed as a result of space constraints that existed in smaller homes at a certain point in history. These beds, to this day, fit this purpose.
