Spending on Designer Jewellery Escalates

Recent research has found that consumers are continuing to buy designer jewellery despite the current economic climate.

An investigation by market research firm Mintel discovered that the watch and designer jewellery market has grown by ten per cent since 2005 to £4.8 billion in 2010 and the sector is expected to grow by a further 11 per cent over the next five years.

The Watches and Jewellery Retailing UK, September 2010 report also found that the recession was prompting people to switch from buying gold designer jewellery to silver jewellery.

Furthermore, the economic downturn was leading some people to opt for costume jewellery instead of precious and more consumers were seen investing in a number of accessories in place of one expensive item.

Tamara Sender, senior fashion analyst at Mintel, told Retail Jeweller: "What we've seen during the recession people are accessorising with costume pieces to jazz up old outfits."

"People have continued to spend and costume jewellery and fashion watches have been the biggest growth area. This has echoed what is happening in the clothes market where consumers are more willing to spend on disposable, inexpensive items."

Kate Moss' first designer jewellery collection for Topshop has been launched this week as the supermodel's collaboration with the high street retailer comes to the end of a four year partnership.

A range of jewellery has been created to compliment Moss' clothes but Topshop has decided to cancel their deal with the supermodel due to time constraints.

Sir Philip Green, Topshop owner, said: "It has been fantastic for us and fantastic for her, but [the designs] take more and more time and she cannot do this full-time any more."

Kate Moss has been in the news recently by posing topless for the promotion of David Yurman's latest designer jewellery range while fellow celebrity Coleen Rooney has filmed the Littlewoods Christmas advert wearing sparkling trinkets.

The latest craze in designer accessories appears to be crystal encrusted poppies as made popular by judges on the X Factor.

Created by jewellery designer Kleshna, the Swarkovski Poppy Crochet Brooch was worn by Simon Cowell and is currently very popular with those people aiming to pay tribute to Britain's troops while remaining stylish in time for Remembrance Sunday.

The Royal British Legion told the Daily Mail: "Shows like The X Factor are shown to millions of people and it is bound to raise awareness and encourage people to wear a poppy."

Remembrance Sunday falls on November 14th this year and will be marked by the traditional Cenotaph ceremony.
