Depending on the age of a child, wearing glasses is either seen as super cool or super not. Thanks to the Harry Potter craze, many young children may actually request that they be able to wear glasses. Some parents have even reported that their child faked a bad eye exam in order to be treated to their desired spectacles. Through thorough examination by an eye doctor, accurate vision requirements can be determined and eyeglasses or contact lenses can be prescribed. The question has long been: how old does a child have to be to be considered a good candidate for contact lenses? The answer is not set in stone; rather, it is highly dependent on the maturity level of the child. If your child is not at a point where they can maintain contact lenses; put them in each day, remove them each day and disinfect them each day; then there are only two viable options for eye care to be considered. For children who may not be able to handle contact lenses without consistent help from their parent, the options are eyeglasses or daily contact lenses. One study has come to the conclusion that kids between the ages of 8 and 11 are good candidates for daily contact lenses; since these do not require daily maintenance in the way of cleaning. Kids who play sports bring another reason for the use of daily contact lenses, however. After all, it can be difficult running around and trying to catch, kick or dribble a ball when you also have to keep eyeglasses on your face. Wearing lenses gives sports-playing kids a way to have the best possible view of the field on which they play. Also, because contact lenses stay stable in the eye of the wearer even when running, vision remains stable throughout their sport activity. Even if a child is not responsible to the point of being able to wear even daily contact lenses in their everyday life; these lenses are still a viable option during sports if nothing else. Especially if the sport your child plays is competitive, their vision is highly important in order for them to play to the best of their abilities. Through proper eyewear, an athlete gains better overall vision, to include peripheral vision and acuity to see objects moving towards them sooner than they might without glasses or special sport lenses. Kids have more than their vision on their minds. It may require many conversations with your child to make a definitive decision as to the type of eyewear that will serve their needs best. Kids may feel that wearing eyeglasses will impact their image. Studies have indeed shown that wearing glasses does often impact a child's view of themselves, as well as how they are perceived and received socially. If eyeglasses are the best option for your child, remember to talk to them continually about what makes them unique and acceptable as a person. Eyeglasses are only a thing that they wear; not who they are.
