The premise is a good one, basically offering a financial incentive for renewable energy use. The feed-in-tariffs (FIT) have some so-called energy companies promising that you can rent your roof and get the solar panels for free. Renewable energy is electricity generated from any natural source such as the sun, the wind, or rain. Renewable means that the supply is naturally restored. Solar panels provide electricity from the sun and it is a readily available. Many companies are looking to profit from the FIT by promising big returns to those homeowners who want to rent their roof for solar panels to be installed for free. The premise is based on the assumption that most homeowners will jump at the chance to cut their monthly expenses by using renewable energy. They promise savings to the homeowner but they are actually looking to pocket the large annual feed-in-tariff. These companies are in essence offering to rent the solar panels to the homeowners in exchange for the annual tariff as their nominal fee. The reality is that the so called rent your roof for free is a scam designed for the company to profit from the FIT scheme and not the homeowner. These companies only care about making money and not about saving the environment through the use of renewable energy. The FIT scheme is allowing these unscrupulous businesses to capitalize by creating a scam that promises savings up to £1,000 for homeowners. The main criticism is that when you rent something, you don't own it until you make the final payment. In effect, installation of the homeowners is not actually free because the tariff will now be paid to the company who supplied to the solar panels. This will nullify any savings, because the company will pocket the incentives for entire length of the scheme-projected to be paid for 25 years. It would be less expensive for the homeowner to install the solar panels themselves. Buying their own solar panels would add up to real monthly savings on electrical costs, and allowing them to pocket the FITS. Free isn't always good, beware of any company offering a rent your roof for free solar panels installation. You won't pay for the solar panels, but they will collect the feed-in-tariffs for 25 years.
