I hear from a lot of local business owners about the things they're trying online. Some of their attempts work and some don't. I list here three of the top things that are working online for business owners and three things that are either wasting their time or money. First off, I'll begin with the online marketing techniques that are not working. Many phone book representatives are now pushing their online premium services to many business owners. The prices can range anywhere from $50 up to $400 per month for premium listings. The representatives point out that phone book advertising pages are exposed to many millions of searches per month. They are not quite being truthful when they say this. They seem to imply that many millions of people per month go to their website to perform searches. That simply is not true. What they are saying only is that their pages are available to the search engines when many millions of searches per month or performs there on Google, Yahoo, and Bing. In almost all cases the monthly investment for these types of listings are never profitable. Next are the pay per click advertising methods. Although these are not scams, and are actually very valuable marketing tools, but they are extremely hard to learn how to perform a successful ROI with. Only experienced advertisers are able to do well with this type of advertising. It is virtually impossible for online marketing beginners to do well in this area without significant practice and plenty of trial and error. Unfortunately, with this type of online advertising, trial and error also means spending money. Next on my list for things that simply do not work are the many offers for generating traffic and leads to websites. Simply put, if the offer looks too good to be true then most surely it is. We've all seen the ads which offer 50,000 website visitors for $29. These types of offers are absolute scams and will not result in even one legitimate visitor to your website. It simply is not possible to be successful online by simply paying $29 or even a few hundred dollars for generating traffic. Any offers that promise such will result in wasted time and money. Next I'll discuss three areas that are working for local business owners who are advertising online. The absolute best placement for a business in online local search is right next to the Google map. We call those listings Google places. Those businesses are listed there by the Google map will receive more calls and get more clicks than any other location on a search results page. Best of all, these placements are absolutely no cost. There is no charge by Google for these placements or the clicks which result from online local searches. Additionally, the second best place to have a website positioned for a local search is right beneath the Google places. Here are the list of relevant websites Google has judged worthy of ranking well. Next on the list is e-mail marketing. Don't confuse this with the many offers seen online where thousands of e-mail leads can be purchased for a small amount of money. The only way e-mail marketing works is for a business to build their own e-mail list with their own targeted leads and/or customers. Marketing to that very specific group correctly can be an extremely profitable venture for all business owners. It's quite sad most business owners do not take advantage of this very powerful marketing method. Lastly on the list of things that are working very well for business owners is video marketing. Video marketing can be used in a number of ways. The two most popular methods for taking advantage of this marketing style are YouTube submissions and placing videos on one's website. Nowadays, both of these are extremely easy to do. Many inexpensive video cameras easily interface with YouTube simply by plugging them into a computer. Once the videos are published online is a simple matter to copy and paste some code onto one's website so the video also shows up there. There you have them! Three of the top marketing methods that work and three that don't work. As a local business owner there is no need to reinvent the wheel. Simply look at other businesses marketing methods to see what is working and what's not.
