Finding the right doctor of chiropractic to suit your needs is extremely important. Just as word-of-mouth is how many choose a medical doctor, it may well be the best way to find a doctor of chiropractic as well. There are different techniques that are used in chiropractic treatment and you need to find the one that you are most comfortable with.

It is often a good idea to find out the educational and practical expertise. Learn where he or she went to school and how long they have been in practice. Different schools teach different practices, just as schools in other professions may vary.

A chiropractor should be accredited by the "Council on Chiropractic Education". It is also advisable to investigate whether any negligence or malpractice claims have been made. That information can be found by contacting your sstate board of examiners. Often you can locate the information on their website. Check with your insurer to see if your potential chiropractor has had any complaints brought against the practice. It is not unheard of to ask the chiropractor for references from patients that have been treated. This is especially true if you are new to the community.

What chiropractic techniques does this potential chiropractor use. Some use different techniques in the process of their manipulation. Some use only their hands for a gentle adjustment. Others may use a much deeper technique. Some will also use instruments designed for the adjustments.

Inquire as to how long the appointment will last and what is their preference on your frequency. It may well serve you to find out if there are techniques other than manipulation that the practitioner uses. Some of these techniques are relaxation, strength training, rehabilitation and nutritional counseling. How open to these kind of practices are you? Also be open with your chiropractor and ask if they are willing to refer you to other programs if their treatment is not effective in your particular case.

What about X-rays? Some will use X-rays as a standard procedure. Others take them if the situation requires it, as determined by standards of practice. If the instance is arthritis, long lasting pain, trauma or in the instance of seniors, they are advisable. There should always be a correlation between the cause of the visit and the need for the X-ray.

It is important to have a good rapport with the doctor of chiropractic. You should feel at ease and know that they are listening to you and are interested in you as an individual. Often the state of mind of the patient and the speed of recovery have a very close correlation. If you do not like the chiropractor, chances are your stress will increase with each visit and be counter-productive. If you find that you are not comfortable, it is time to seek help elsewhere.
