The issue of malaria has become a serious political and social concern even since World War II when soldiers came back from the Pacific area with the disease. It is also important to bring/use sprays and repellent even if you are taking prescribed anti-malarial medication. If you are sleeping outdoors or with windows open it is a good idea to sleep amongst special netting made to keep these pests out. Finally, during the evening it is a good idea to wear clothing that covers as much skin as possible. For example, if you are sitting outside, a lightweight, long sleeve zip-up jacket would be a great idea. Medication may not prevent all forms of malaria, so it is important to try to minimize the amount of bites you get while in a country that has malaria issues.
Malaria is not the only insect carried disease that is out there. Before traveling anywhere outside the U.S. it is important to get as much information as possible concerning health issues the country you traveling to may have. If you take as many precautions as you can, the chances of you having a safe trip and returning home without any health issues goes way up. So, travel smart, safe, and be aware of any health risks before you go.
