The Dangers Of Malaria

[Valid RSS feed]  Category Rss Feed - http://www.articlesbacklink.com/rss.php?rss=92
By : Stewart Wrighter

The issue of malaria has become a serious political and social concern even since World War II when soldiers came back from the Pacific area with the disease. According to an exterminator, the disease is very rare in the United States, because our weather simply is not tropical enough. There are many parts of the world that are affected by this disease since, according to a mosquito control company; most countries have these insects around everywhere. The difference is these insects are the ones who carry this virus and transmit it through their bite. The main symptoms of malaria are high fever and chills, similar to the flu. The problem with malaria is once you have it, you will have it for life. Some cases are more serious than others with some resulting in death. Once you have it, it usually occurs in cycles throughout your life. Even though it is an insect that acts as the carrier, the actual things causing the symptoms are parasites. There are preventative medications that can be taken ahead of a trip to a country with malaria, however, some parasites are resistant to the drugs, so it is important to also take some extra precautions that are mentioned later on in the article.

There are many places in the world that are affected by malaria. It is mostly warm, tropical regions where the bugs carry the disease. Some of the countries that are affected include: Brazil, Senegal, Southern Asia, and many other countries that are close to the equator and a large body of water usually the ocean. The Center for Disease Control and the U.S. Department of State both have country profiles where people traveling to a specific country can look up health concerns before travel.

It is possible to prevent the disease if you are traveling to a country that has the problem of malaria. The United States has drugs available that can be prescribed if you are traveling to an affected part of the world. You must consult your doctor about the risks of the drugs versus the risks of the disease before visiting an area that has malaria. It is also important to bring/use sprays and repellent even if you are taking prescribed anti-malarial medication. If you are sleeping outdoors or with windows open it is a good idea to sleep amongst special netting made to keep these pests out. Finally, during the evening it is a good idea to wear clothing that covers as much skin as possible. For example, if you are sitting outside, a lightweight, long sleeve zip-up jacket would be a great idea. Medication may not prevent all forms of malaria, so it is important to try to minimize the amount of bites you get while in a country that has malaria issues.

Malaria is not the only insect carried disease that is out there. Before traveling anywhere outside the U.S. it is important to get as much information as possible concerning health issues the country you traveling to may have. If you take as many precautions as you can, the chances of you having a safe trip and returning home without any health issues goes way up. So, travel smart, safe, and be aware of any health risks before you go.
