Wherever your child's interests lie, attending a specialized creative arts camp is a great way for her to nurture her passions and develop her skill sets. A variety of these programs are offered across the country, with specialties ranging from dance and music to arts and sports. They provide a full artistic immersion in which children are exposed to these activities for a large part of every day. But before sending your child to one of these programs, it's a good idea to gauge her interests and skill levels in order for her to get the most out of the experience. Many camps have a minimum age requirement of 7 or 8 years old, and it's likely that your child will be showing a curiosity for certain activities by this point in her development. Have a discussion with your child and find out what activities she is interested in, whether it's something she is already passionate about or a skill she's always wanted to learn. While some children might prefer a traditional camp that focuses primarily on outdoor activities like hiking or canoeing, others are looking to specifically gain experience in some art form and would benefit from total immersion art camps. These programs build their daily activities around a range of fine and performing arts, while also including some time for more traditional activities like swimming and horseback riding. Once you find an arts program that appeals to your child, make sure she also has the skill set required to participate in the activities. Some camps are geared toward children who already have some experience in a given activity, for example, while others are designed for kids with no familiarity at all. It's important to take this into consideration, not only so your child doesn't feel held back by new learners, but also to keep her from falling behind more skilled participants. Another thing to look into is the experience level of the counselors and the structure of the programs. Ask about the qualifications of the staff and look for arts programs with lower camper-to-counselor ratios. This will ensure that your aspiring dance prodigy or music star is getting the best possible instruction and a closer mentoring relationship with counselors. Of course, you can also get a good idea of the quality of prospective programs by getting feedback from past attendees and their parents. Also, be sure your child is aware of the length of the camp - and that the interest level is high enough for the session in mind. While some are just one or two weeks long, others might last for most of the summer. But whatever type of arts camp is chosen, your child will greatly benefit from an experience that cultivates her passions, while teaching her some important life lessons in the process.
