Taking Hobby Designer Jewelry To The Commercial Level

By : Stewart Wrighter

Many artists who started making designer jewelry as a sideline hobby were not certain it would ever evolve into a lucrative job opportunity, but as this type of jewelry became more and more popular in the fashion marketplace, these artists began to be recognized for their talents. Many of these artists now have established businesses that have even gotten the attention of the Sundance catalog, where some of their pieces are listed for sale.

A decade ago, these artists were part-time hobby jewelry designers with great ideas but no marketplace exposure. Some of them began to distribute their creative jewelry to family and friends, and then other people would inquire about these pieces, and some of these artists wore many of their own creations. Some artists would display their handcrafted jewelry at local art shows. Using techniques such as word of mouth and light branding, these artists began to be noticed as talented jewelry designers.

As the popularity of these jewelry creations continued to grow, artists decided to take the plunge and try going commercial with their jewelry designs. As many creative artists have done before, these designers began to attend craft shows where they could display and sell their merchandise. This type of marketing and branding is a great way for new artists to get noticed.

Many of these artists incorporate natural elements and semi precious stones in their work, and many of these creations are one of a kind design. The properties of the jewelry that gain market popularity include quality, beauty, and uniqueness. People are willing to pay more for a design when they can boast that it is the only one of its kind.

As the demand for this type of jewelry increased, many of these talented artisans left their day jobs to pursue their jewelry design careers full-time, devoting all of their available free time to their artistic creations. Continued sales success allowed these artists to hire additional office staff in order to free up more time for them to devote to their designs.

Many of these artists are adamant about creating the majority of their pieces by hand, incorporating the arts of silver smith, wire wrapping, and casting. They may not always have a clear idea at inception as to what a piece might evolve into, but that is part of the fun and magic of it; just letting the creative juices flow. These artists are known to use gold, brass, and copper, and silver in many of their jewelry designs.

Any durable and beautiful stone can also find its way into a jewelry design. Some of the basic semi precious materials used in the craft include onyx, jasper, coral, aqua marine, quartz, turquoise, amethyst, and agate.

Not all of these designs are produced for one particular taste or style. Creations range from elegant jewelry to natural earthy designs. These artists pride themselves in having the ability to appeal to a wide variety of tastes. By expanding their creations into many different styles, they can appeal to a larger market and increase their sales.
